Walkathons

Walkathons are fun to do with a walking buddy. The atmosphere is great. There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes they have a light aerobic dance warm-up. They almost always have music and always have snacks or lunch (a lot of the food is high sugar, so if you have a sugar problem, you may have to decide how you're going to handle the free ice cream before you are starving and face-to-face with it). They require a pledge to participate in the walkathon, it can be a donation from you or you can get sponsors.

Walkathons can be found by contacting the specific charity that sponsors it or in calendar sections of newspapers, i.e. LA Times, City Sports Magazine, Competitor Magazine, raceplace Southern California, Runners' and Walkers' magazines. Some of the magazines are free and typically found in "healthy" places, gyms, frozen yogurt stores, etc.

Amusement Parks and Zoos

Amusement Parks and Zoos are so big that you can literally walk for miles and have a great time doing it. Wear a calibrated pedometer to measure your mileage. You can use this as a combination weight loss reward and exercise day! Again, amusement parks and zoos can be found in tour books of your area or the calendar section of your newspaper, i.e. Orange County Register, LA Times. (I am not providing a direct link to the LA Times Calander site because it locked up my computer. It may just mean I need a browser upgrade. Proceed with caution - the URL is: http://www.calendarlive.com/ ).

Here are some examples:

Disney World
Disneyland
Yesterland - An Unofficial website about old Disney attractions. Okay, this is an armchair trip and the only exercise you'll get is moving the mouse - but it's nostalgic and wonderful!
Yesterland - Theme Parks, Fairs and Amusement Parks. This is the quintessential link to fun stuff!
Universal Studios
Knott's Berry Farm
Six Flags Magic Mountain
SeaWorld
LA Zoo
San Diego Zoo

Car Shows

Car shows have it all; beautiful cars, lots of walking and, if you are single, millions of men! If you're not single, the man in your life will most likely love going to a car show. Can it possibly get better than this? There are "new" car shows and "classic" car shows. Both are fun. The new car shows have pretty color brochures and you can sit in most of the cars. For at least a few seconds, you can picture yourself as the proud owner of your dream car. The classic car shows are incredible because the cars are truly pieces of art. There are large, luxurious, classic car shows called "Concours d' Elegance".

You have to keep your eye on the newspapers for these shows. The big shows have their own section in our Sunday newspaper. The new car shows are held in the same place and time every year in L.A. There is one at the Anaheim Convention Center in November and a very large show in the L.A. Convention Center in January. In 2000, the dates are January 8-16, 2000.

Historical Society Tours and House and Garden Tours

Several Historical Societies have House and Garden Tours and Historic District Tours. The Los Angeles Conservancy (213 623-CITY) has several downtown walking tours on Saturday mornings and great architectural tours. The Pasadena Historical Society (818 793-0617) has Saturday morning walks and special house tours. Long Beach Heritage (562 493-7019) also has walking tours.

Historical Society Tours and House and Garden Tours can be found in local calendar sections of newspapers, i.e. LA Times, Chambers of Commerce, Auto Club Magazines. If you find a Historical Society that has tours that you enjoy, it's easiest to subscribe to their newletter. House tours are typically done on the first weekend of December for Christmas, in Spring and sometimes in the Fall.
Two amazing links with historical society and sightseeing info for California; Los Angeles County Historical Agencies and California Historical Agencies by County.
